Mental Math

To start your day, begin by spending about 30 minutes playing one of the mental math games that are posted! You can find these under the tab in the top right hand corner labelled "Mental Math".

Tally Charts

The topic for today's lesson is going to be tally charts! This is something your students have already been exposed to in previous years, but just to jog their memory, below is a quick worksheet you can complete with them. You can choose to either print it off or write it down on your own piece of paper, whatever works best for you!

Neighbourhood Walk

Next, we're going to have the students get up and get some fresh air! Take your student on a walk around the neighbourhood and have them look for a few things along the way. The five different things to look out for are people, animals, cars, traffic signs, and street lamps; bring some paper with you, and jot down every time you see any of them! Once you return from the walk, fill out the tally chart posted below with your student based on the data you collected on your walk. If for any reason you are unable to go for a walk - don't you worry! Staying at home and predicting what you might see on a walk will be just as effective. The survey question for this will be, "What did you see on your walk?"

Wrap Up

After you have completed the chart together, wrap up the lesson by talking a little bit about what you saw! What did you see the most of? What did you see the least of? Do your results reflect what you thought you would see?
