Lesson 5: Did You Say....Line Plot?

Updated: Apr 24, 2020

Mental Math

To start your day, begin by spending about 30 minutes playing one of the mental math games that are posted! You can find these under the tab in the top right hand corner labelled "Mental Math".

The Line Plot Song

To begin our little line plot journey together, I found another catchy song to help you dive into line plots and bring some fun to our lesson!

Introduction Video

Just like for our introduction to bar graphs, I have created a guided video of myself explaining the important structures and characteristics of line plots for you and your student! After you have finished watching the video together, discuss the differences and similarities between bar graphs and line plots. Talk about which one they might think seems easier or which they prefer, and why!

Creating Your Own

Now that we've watched some videos and have become a little more comfortable with what a line plot is, it's time to make your own! I have created a chart for you below with some data that has already been filled in, and a blank line plot template. Use the chart and the blank template (or just a piece of paper!) to create your own line plot about siblings!

Reflecting Back

Congratulations! You've just made your first line plot! Now before you go, take a moment to check in with your student again about the similarities and differences between a bar graph and line plot, and which one they might prefer. Their opinions may have changed after they made one, and they might notice things they hadn't noticed before!
